The Story of an English Stupa
A film by Judi Alston using archive footage she shot in Bhutan in 2003/4
The Story of an English Stupa reveals an extraordinary meeting of cultures, when monks from the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan are invited to build a Buddhist monument, a stupa, in the grounds of Harewood House in Yorkshire.
Judi follows the personal spiritual journey of David Lascelles, 8th Earl of Harewood, from his family’s home of more than 250 years as he seeks to reconcile its turbulent history. A rich and colourful story of friendship with unique insight into the significance of stupas and the legacy of the Harewood Stupa. Judi joined David Lascelles on a tour of the UK in 2022 to launch his book 'A Hare Marked Moon’ about the Harewood Stupa and audiences had the chance to see ‘work in progress’ extracts of the film.
The film was entered into film festivals in 2024 and we will continue to do so in 2025 to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Stupa at Harewood House.
